Anne-Marie O’Farrell was born in Dublin and studied at the DIT College of Music, University College Dublin and the National University of Ireland, Maynooth, where she recently gained an MA in composition. Her composition teachers have included Seóirse Bodley, Martin O’Leary and John Buckley and she has also attended masterclasses with Karl Aage Rassmussen and Judith Weir. She is the recipient of many national composition awards, including the Mostly Modern Composers’ Competition, the University of Dublin Prize for Choral Composition and the UCC Capriccio Festival Composition Competition. In 1996 she was a finalist in RTÉ’s Composer of the Future Competition.
Her output comprises of orchestral, choral and chamber music, including an extensive body of harp repertoire. Her works have been performed by artists such as the National Chamber Choir, Cantique, trombonist Gavin Roche and pianists Dearbhla Collins and John Lenehan. Many of her compositions, arrangements and performances have been recorded for TV and radio worldwide. She has also made several commercial recordings. Both as soloist and accompanist she has toured extensively in Europe and the United States. Also committed to the promotion of new music, she has premiered and recorded twelve new Irish compositions for flute and harp with flautist Philippa Davies at the IMRO Summer School of Composition.
Recent premieres include her work for brass and percussion, ‘In the Beginning’ at the National Concert Hall (2007), ‘Sante Sana Tanzania in Dar es Salaam’ (2008), ‘Ruach’ at Christ Church Cathedral (2008) and ‘Love the Lord’ at Christ Church Cathedral (2008). She lectures in composition at the DIT Conservatory of Music & Drama.
